SUMMARY:Tunitas Creek Beach Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  Due to the State-Wide Shelter-In-Place Order\, Tunitas Beach Clean-Ups will be cancelled until further notice. Sign-ups will stay active on Eventbrite\, but just be mindful that there may be cancellations.  \nYou can find more details and Sign-Up @ Eventbrite.com here \nFeel free to email aloha@TLClocals.org with questions\, information or concerns. Hope to see you all out there !! \nDescription\nTunitas Creek Beach is a hidden gem to the South of Half Moon Bay that due to it’s secluded and challenging location\, has historically been pretty badly polluted by visitors. Being such a long stretch of beach with a steep cliff at one end and long hike along and creek crossing at the other it makes collecting and removing trash and debris even more difficult. We need all hands on deck for our monthly clean-ups to keep this beach beautiful and its sea life safe and healthy. This is a great opportunity for groups of friends\, families\, co-workers\, school groups\, athletes\, clubs to come together\, have fun and really make a difference! \nWhat to bring: \nBYOB (bring your own bucket and gloves). . . we do have buckets and gloves in limited supply\, but they go quickly! \nWater is provided\, but we do ask you bring a reusable bottle to fill-up. \nWe also have zero-waste snacks\, Bananas / Tangerines / Pistacios\, hand sanitizer and sunscreen at all events. \nChange of shoes/socks is highly recommended as certain times of year the creek and lagoon on the beach may need to be crossed. \nOther considerations: \nMost clean-ups run from 9-11* on the 4th Sunday* of the monthand then we sort and stage the trash for pick-up at the Hwy Entrance to the South until 11:30am. \n*Note: our April and September events will fall on a Saturday and will coincide with Pacific Beach Coalition’s Earth Day of Action / EcoFest and SMC’s CA Coastal Clean-Up Day \nThere are no age restrictions and is a GREAT event for families. \nParking and clean-up check in will be at the Highway 1 turn-out (south of Tunitas Creek Rd) on the West side of the HWY – there will be signs posted. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: There are currently NO facilities/bathrooms at Tunitas. The nearest bathrooms are in HMB proper (9mi North) or San Gregorio State Beach (6mi South) \n

SUMMARY:Shortcourse: Introduction to groundwater\, watersheds\, and the nuts and bolts of sustainable groundwater plans
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the fundamental principles of groundwater and watersheds and how we monitor\, assess\, and sustainably manage these resources with climate change and variability is critical and integral to Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) and other water-related programs. Whether at the local\, state\, or federal level\, these programs are designed for sustainable development\, management\, and protection of water resources in California among competing users. \n  \nAs Groundwater Sustainability Agencies in California develop and implement their GSPs\, professionals\, decision makers\, executives\, agency employees\, and stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and in a wide variety of private\, non-profit\, and government responsibilities at local\, state\, and federal levels\, become directly or indirectly involved in the sustainable management and assessment of groundwater and surface water to meet the requirements of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Yet\, many participants find themselves lacking the multidisciplinary background and expertise to meaningfully participate in the technical and regulatory efforts related to water resources management. The amount of technical information available often seems overwhelming. \n  \nThis shortcourse will review the fundamental principles of groundwater and watershed hydrology\, water budgets\, water quality\, and water law and regulation in an intuitive\, highly accessible fashion. Through real world examples\, participants will learn about the most common tools for measuring\, monitoring\, and assessing groundwater and surface water resources. \n  \nThe course will then review the key elements of a GSP. Case studies are used so participants learn about \n• Development of conceptual models\, water budgets\, and GSP sustainability criteria;\n• Designing minimum thresholds and operating targets (measureable objectives) for GSPs and how to link those to monitoring networks;\n• Methods for addressing climate variability and climate change;\n• Recharge as a tool to enhance groundwater supplies;\n• GSA governance; and\n• Available online planning resources. \n  \nThe course is specifically geared towards an audience that is or will be involved in the management\, assessment\, and protection of groundwater and surface water resources under SGMA\, but also engages with\, e.g.\, source water assessments\, urban water management plans\, and integrated regional water management plans. Course attendees\, who may have some experience with but no formal training in hydrology or related engineering or science fields\, will benefit from the basic and intuitive\, yet comprehensive approach of this course. \n  \nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:2020 CASQA Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 CASQA Annual Conference is Going Virtual\nThe 2020 CASQA Annual Conference\, previously scheduled to be held September 14 – 16\, 2020 at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego\, California\, will be migrated to a virtual platform. As we are all well aware\, physical distancing restrictions will be slowly modified in California over time\, but what that looks like for large gatherings\, and the timeframe for such modifications\, is unknown. \n  \nOne of the core components of who we are as CASQA is leadership. Therefore\, CASQA has opted to lead through these challenges by providing certainty in these uncertain times. Part of CASQA’s mission is to educate and this virtual platform will maximize access and opportunities for learning together in 2020. We will develop an outstanding conference experience\, albeit a new one\, and are choosing to use these next few months to plan ahead and migrate our typical conference components into an interactive virtual platform. \n  \nWe are rapidly developing the format and will provide further details in the next few weeks. But\, the conference will be interactive and include the outstanding content and program that we are known for\, as well as opportunities for sponsors\, exhibitors\, and even virtual networking. We are excited to see just how innovative we can be and\, as always\, we are #CASQAtogether. \n  \nVirtual Conference Overview \n————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– \nThe CASQA Annual Conference offers a unique opportunity to interact with professionals in the stormwater field. Each year the conference draws leading members of the stormwater community including local\, state\, and federal decision makers\, stormwater program coordinators\, contractors\, consultants\, engineers\, lawyers\, scientists\, and planners. Join fellow stormwater practitioners and exhibitors for in-depth training and discussions addressing a wide range of challenges and opportunities facing stormwater professionals in California and beyond. \n  \nCASQA 2020: Envision the Future \n“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” \nJoel A. Barker \nCASQA’s Vision Statement recognizes Sustainable Stormwater Management as a vital component of California’s water resources. Stewardship of our stormwater resources must balance human and ecological needs including protecting water quality\, enhancing and restoring waterways\, and providing an additional source for water supply. With this in mind\, we ask you to envision the future of stormwater. At the conference we will explore ways to incorporate sustainable solutions for our water quality challenges\, integrate the best science and technologies to ensure future generations can enjoy our waters\, provide equity by engaging in all communities\, drive consensus building with multi-benefit solutions\, and explore funding for the future we envision. \n  \nConference Overview and Agenda: \n\nConference Overview\n2020 Conference Agenda (link will be available July 2020). Note: This is the most current agenda.\nConference Program\n\nWe will not be printing the conference program for the 2020 virtual conference. Instead will provide a .pdf version here (link pending)\nNote: The .pdf may not include changes made in the last few weeks before the conference begins. The online Conference Agenda linked above is the most current version.\n\n\n\n  \nConference Registration Information: \nCASQA members receive a substantial discount. Learn more about becoming a CASQA member to take advantage of discounted rates. \n\nGeneral Attendee Registration: June – date pending\nSpeaker / Panelist Registration: Opens circa July 1 (following speaker selections and confirmation)\nExhibit Space Registration: June – date pending\nSponsorship & Advertising Purchase: June – date pending

SUMMARY:International Low Impact Development Conference
DESCRIPTION:Setting the Vision for the Next 20 Years \n\nThe International Low Impact Development Conference highlights interdisciplinary practice\, research\, and implementation of Low Impact Development (LID)\, Green Infrastructure (GI)\, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and Water Sensitive Urban Designs (WSUD). The focus will be on using our past and present understanding of LID to tune management programs\, design practice\, and operation and maintenance into the future. \n  \nTop 5 Reasons to Attend \n\nLearn from national and international leaders in municipal green infrastructure program operations and research by attending panels and sessions.\nEarn Professional Development Hours. A full participant can earn up to 11.0 PDHs by participating in the conference.\nNetwork with industry leaders and make valuable contacts.\nConnect with exhibitors showcasing state of the art products\, services and solutions.\nParticipate from the comfort of your own home or office.\n\nTestimonials \n“The new distance tools are excellent!  Villanova has been teaching Graduate Courses in an in-class and distance mode for many years.  I feel I can get to know my students; I can see when they understand the material\, and when they don’t.  From an EWRI perspective\, I have advocated distance connections for years.  I expect we will reach MANY more members\, who don’t have to take an extra 2 days off work for travel\, or pay hotel and transportation.   See you at LID!” \n– Robert G. Traver\, Ph.D.\, P.E.\, D. WRE\, F.EWRI\, F.ASCE\, Villanova University \n“Virtual webinars and presentations have become much more engaging thanks to recent development and promotion of helpful tools and apps\, the creativity of presenters\, and the fact that 2020 provided all of us with a crash course in remote technology.” \n– Holly Piza\, P.E.\, M.ASCE-EWRI\,  Standards Development Manager\, Mile High Flood District \n“I think virtual conferences/meetings provide a sense of normalcy during this unprecedented time. We’re still able to share ideas and have a laugh or two with the individuals we’ve grown accustomed to interacting with. I’ve found it’s been easier to take notes and engage with presenters during virtual meetings. More importantly\, I think these virtual events help reach a wider audience which will only benefit the environmental community.” \n– Sarah Waickowski\, P.E.\, NC State University

SUMMARY:Mussel Rock Beach Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:About the Pacific Beach Coalition Cleanup: \nTime: Fourth Saturday of the month from 9am-11am\, rain or shine.\n\nWhere to Meet:  At the Mussel Rock carpark located at the lower coastal end of Westline Drive by the second entrance to Allied Waste Transfer Station. Drive north past the junction of Skyline Drive\, avoiding the other Westline Drive that goes up a steep hill.\n\nParking:  Free parking is available all the time on any of the roads or at the car park at the meet up spot. Follow the signs to the car park so that you do not get lost on the other Westline Drive that ends up above the Transfer Station.\n\nCleanup Areas: The team cleans up the streets\, bluffs\, car park and park\, itself\, as well as the beach if the tide is out far enough for our safety.  There is the Secret Waterfall nearby that is a good place to clean if you are looking for excitement rappelling down a rope to the bluff and walking down to the beach.\n\nSupplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own buckets and reusable gloves. Extra gloves\, buckets\, pickup sticks and specific tools for this site cleanup will be provided while supplies last. The weather is unpredictable (very cold and windy\, although it can be sunny and warm).  Make sure to bring extra layers\, a hat\, sunblock\, water and snacks.\n\nLitter: The team usually picks up plastic bags\, bottles\, cigarettes and other household waste because this is where the Bay Area’s trash is brought before it is transferred to other sites. Mussel Rock Beach is a designated Japanese Tsunami Marine Debris Cleanup Program site\, and is the only one that has reported items to NOAA and GGNRA which appear to have originated from Japan.\n\nRestrooms: Regrettably\, there are no public restrooms at this site. \n\nSite Captains: Helen & Julie \n\nMore details: here \nBe sure to read through the Cleanup Guidelines before attending the cleanup.\nMore questions? Read their Beach Cleanup FAQs. \n\nWould You Like to Join Them? To make sure we bring the right amount of supplies\, to be more efficient and conserve paper\, please complete their online form. It will only take you a few seconds. Sign up here!

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Resilience from Below: Proactively Managing Groundwater to Sustain Communities and Nature in an Uncertain Future
DESCRIPTION:Presented By: Maurice Hall\, Ph.D.\, Associate Vice President\, Ecosystems-Water\, Environmental Defense Fund \nGroundwater provides a wide array of services to support our economy and communities. Perhaps most obviously\, it captures distributed rainfall and delivers it to wells. It also sustains rivers and streams\, supports groundwater-dependent ecosystems\, and serves as an incredible storage reservoir. Yet\, except for a few notable exceptions\, our groundwater basins\, these amazing natural infrastructure facilities\, are largely managed passively\, if they are managed at all. Even the most successful examples of proactive groundwater basin management tend to be focused primarily on one service – sustained supply to wells. Inevitably\, this passive or singularly focused groundwater management means that other groundwater services are compromised over time. With a bit more attention and sophistication\, however\, the multiple benefits that groundwater basins provide can be preserved\, and in some cases\, enhanced. \nIn his David Keith Todd Distinguished lecture for 2019\, Maurice Hall will share his vision on how more holistic and inclusive groundwater management can increase the resilience of our water supply and sustain and enhance the services that groundwater basins provide for a wide range of stakeholders. Maurice will share some suggestions on how the flexibility offered by California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act allows for innovative approaches that support multiple benefits and how engaging stakeholders beyond water interests in shaping groundwater management can lead to more resilient rural communities and strengthen regional cooperation. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Making Good Decisions: Utilizing Decision-Making Science and Geospatial Data to Streamline Water Planning and Management
DESCRIPTION:A linear path to the prioritization and allocation of water can be difficult\, especially when navigating through its economic\, social\, environmental\, and regulatory constraints. Diverse backgrounds and different expectations of participants can also inhibit a group’s ability to reach direct consensus on project objectives. Here\, we discuss the scientific decision-making processes and a robust yet straight forward route which distills group goals into a coordinated strategy. Utilizing geospatial analysis by accessing free\, high- resolution remote sensing data also helps move a project from consensus to implementation\, especially in data-poor regions and when budget constraints limit data gathering. A review of the benefits of utilizing open-source\, free data and software for geospatial analysis will also be reviewed. \nClick here to register. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the history of mutil-criteria decision making and its use in water resources.\nLearn how to conduct a multi-criteria decision analysis using the Analytical Hierarchy Process.\nLearn how to access free GIS software and remote sensing data\, plus understand its usefulness in water-related geospatial assessments\, especially in regions where data is limited.\n\n \nSpeaker\n \nMaria T. Gibson\nHydrogeologist\nIntegrated Groundwater Resources \nMaria is the founder of Integrated Groundwater Resources\, a consulting firm dedicated to increasing sustainability through integrated methods such as Managed Aquifer Recharge. Maria also works on a variety of academic research assignments\, which includes government agencies located in the state of Washington. She has a PhD in Water Resources Science and a certificate in Water Conflict Management and Transformation from Oregon State University. Maria also volunteers her time to help small\, financially-limited communities develop water resiliency programs.
