Hope to see you all out there !! \nDescription\nTunitas Creek Beach is a hidden gem to the South of Half Moon Bay that due to it’s secluded and challenging location\, has historically been pretty badly polluted by visitors. Being such a long stretch of beach with a steep cliff at one end and long hike along and creek crossing at the other it makes collecting and removing trash and debris even more difficult. We need all hands on deck for our monthly clean-ups to keep this beach beautiful and its sea life safe and healthy. This is a great opportunity for groups of friends\, families\, co-workers\, school groups\, athletes\, clubs to come together\, have fun and really make a difference! \nWhat to bring: \nBYOB (bring your own bucket and gloves). . . we do have buckets and gloves in limited supply\, but they go quickly! \nWater is provided\, but we do ask you bring a reusable bottle to fill-up. \nWe also have zero-waste snacks\, Bananas / Tangerines / Pistacios\, hand sanitizer and sunscreen at all events. \nChange of shoes/socks is highly recommended as certain times of year the creek and lagoon on the beach may need to be crossed. \nOther considerations: \nMost clean-ups run from 9-11* on the 4th Sunday* of the monthand then we sort and stage the trash for pick-up at the Hwy Entrance to the South until 11:30am. \n*Note: our April and September events will fall on a Saturday and will coincide with Pacific Beach Coalition’s Earth Day of Action / EcoFest and SMC’s CA Coastal Clean-Up Day \nThere are no age restrictions and is a GREAT event for families. \nParking and clean-up check in will be at the Highway 1 turn-out (south of Tunitas Creek Rd) on the West side of the HWY – there will be signs posted. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: There are currently NO facilities/bathrooms at Tunitas. The nearest bathrooms are in HMB proper (9mi North) or San Gregorio State Beach (6mi South) \n

DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP)\, the California Water Quality Monitoring Council\, the California Water Boards Data Center\, and the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) are hosting the Fifth Annual California Water Boards Water Data Science Symposium on June 29-30\, 2020. \n  \nIt is vitally important to the California Water Data Science Symposium Planning Committee to ensure the safety and health of our event\, program participants\, and guests. Due to evolving concerns around novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and following the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) updated policy on gatherings to protect public health and slow the spread of COVID-19\, we are currently planning for this year’s Symposium to be a remote event. \n  \nPresentations and/or posters should inform water resource issues for the following subject areas: \n\nAccessibility: What can we do to improve access to and use of water data?\nAdaptation: What can we do to minimize and mitigate changes impacting water in California?\nAgency: How do we engage better with communities – who have everything at stake at water and data decision making – focusing on collection and use of meaningful water data and information?\nChange: How are water related resources and systems changing?\nCommunication: How can we do better at communicating what we know (and don’t know!) to all audiences?\n\nIn addition to these broad themes\, presentations and posters addressing the following specific topics will be prioritized for inclusion in the Symposium program: \n\nData visualization and communication\nInnovative monitoring tools\nOpen data\nStatewide monitoring programs\n\nVisit the Symposium webpage for the agenda\, abstracts\, and speaker bios as they become available. \n  \nWho should attend? \n\nManagers faced with policy decisions\nStaff and volunteers at community science organizations\nScientists and community members working on water related questions or issues\nAspiring academics and budding subject matter experts\nWater nerds\n\nFor Water Board Staff: This is a Water Board sponsored event. DESCRIPTION:About the Restoration \nHosted by: Pacific Beach Coalition \nSite Captain: Michael \nWhere to Meet: On the west side of Highway 1 at Crespi Drive stoplight on the morning of the event. You many also join in on the event after 10am by crossing Highway 1 at the stoplight\, and heading north on the coastal trail bike path to join the team.\nParking: There are two public parking lots available in the area. One lot at Pacifica’s Community Center for a parking fee is located at the corner of Highway 1 and Crespi Drive where you park and cross at the Crespi traffic light then walk north on the bike path towards Rockaway Beach. The other lot is located at Linda Mar State Beach for a parking fee. However\, when you check in\, site captains can provide a parking pass good for use during your participation in the event. Should you stay beyond event hours\, parking fees apply. \nSupplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own favorite planting tools\, a shovel or hoe\, and reusable garden/work gloves. Extra gloves and specific tools will be provided while supplies last. Because we are never sure of the weather\, make sure to bring extra layers\, a hat\, sunblock\, water and snacks. \nFocus Area: Volunteers usually remove non-native and invasive plants between the dunes and bike path as well as the hillside below the highway. \nLitter: The team picks up litter as we find it\, although this is not the main focus of habitat restoration. \nRestrooms: Public restrooms (and outdoor showers) are located at the Linda Mar parking lot\, and are open 6am-10pm. Hope to see you all out there !! \nDescription\nTunitas Creek Beach is a hidden gem to the South of Half Moon Bay that due to it’s secluded and challenging location\, has historically been pretty badly polluted by visitors. Being such a long stretch of beach with a steep cliff at one end and long hike along and creek crossing at the other it makes collecting and removing trash and debris even more difficult. We need all hands on deck for our monthly clean-ups to keep this beach beautiful and its sea life safe and healthy. This is a great opportunity for groups of friends\, families\, co-workers\, school groups\, athletes\, clubs to come together\, have fun and really make a difference! \nWhat to bring: \nBYOB (bring your own bucket and gloves). . . we do have buckets and gloves in limited supply\, but they go quickly! \nWater is provided\, but we do ask you bring a reusable bottle to fill-up. \nWe also have zero-waste snacks\, Bananas / Tangerines / Pistacios\, hand sanitizer and sunscreen at all events. \nChange of shoes/socks is highly recommended as certain times of year the creek and lagoon on the beach may need to be crossed. \nOther considerations: \nMost clean-ups run from 9-11* on the 4th Sunday* of the monthand then we sort and stage the trash for pick-up at the Hwy Entrance to the South until 11:30am. \n*Note: our April and September events will fall on a Saturday and will coincide with Pacific Beach Coalition’s Earth Day of Action / EcoFest and SMC’s CA Coastal Clean-Up Day \nThere are no age restrictions and is a GREAT event for families. \nParking and clean-up check in will be at the Highway 1 turn-out (south of Tunitas Creek Rd) on the West side of the HWY – there will be signs posted. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: There are currently NO facilities/bathrooms at Tunitas. The nearest bathrooms are in HMB proper (9mi North) or San Gregorio State Beach (6mi South) \n

DESCRIPTION:About the Pacific Beach Coalition Cleanup: \nTime: Fourth Saturday of the month from 9am-11am\, rain or shine.\n\nWhere to Meet:  At the Mussel Rock carpark located at the lower coastal end of Westline Drive by the second entrance to Allied Waste Transfer Station. Drive north past the junction of Skyline Drive\, avoiding the other Westline Drive that goes up a steep hill.\n\nParking:  Free parking is available all the time on any of the roads or at the car park at the meet up spot. Follow the signs to the car park so that you do not get lost on the other Westline Drive that ends up above the Transfer Station.\n\nCleanup Areas: The team cleans up the streets\, bluffs\, car park and park\, itself\, as well as the beach if the tide is out far enough for our safety.  There is the Secret Waterfall nearby that is a good place to clean if you are looking for excitement rappelling down a rope to the bluff and walking down to the beach.\n\nSupplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own buckets and reusable gloves. Extra gloves\, buckets\, pickup sticks and specific tools for this site cleanup will be provided while supplies last. The weather is unpredictable (very cold and windy\, although it can be sunny and warm).  Make sure to bring extra layers\, a hat\, sunblock\, water and snacks.\n\nLitter: The team usually picks up plastic bags\, bottles\, cigarettes and other household waste because this is where the Bay Area’s trash is brought before it is transferred to other sites. Mussel Rock Beach is a designated Japanese Tsunami Marine Debris Cleanup Program site\, and is the only one that has reported items to NOAA and GGNRA which appear to have originated from Japan.\n\nRestrooms: Regrettably\, there are no public restrooms at this site. \n\nSite Captains: Helen & Julie \n\nMore details: here \nBe sure to read through the Cleanup Guidelines before attending the cleanup.\nMore questions? You many also join in on the event after 10am by crossing Highway 1 at the stoplight\, and heading north on the coastal trail bike path to join the team. \nParking: There are two public parking lots available in the area. One lot at Pacifica’s Community Center for a parking fee is located at the corner of Highway 1 and Crespi Drive where you park and cross at the Crespi traffic light then walk north on the bike path towards Rockaway Beach. The other lot is located at Linda Mar State Beach for a parking fee. However\, when you check in\, site captains can provide a parking pass good for use during your participation in the event. Should you stay beyond event hours\, parking fees apply. \nSupplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own buckets and reusable gloves. DESCRIPTION:Presented By: Maurice Hall\, Ph.D.\, Associate Vice President\, Ecosystems-Water\, Environmental Defense Fund \nGroundwater provides a wide array of services to support our economy and communities. Perhaps most obviously\, it captures distributed rainfall and delivers it to wells. It also sustains rivers and streams\, supports groundwater-dependent ecosystems\, and serves as an incredible storage reservoir. Yet\, except for a few notable exceptions\, our groundwater basins\, these amazing natural infrastructure facilities\, are largely managed passively\, if they are managed at all. Even the most successful examples of proactive groundwater basin management tend to be focused primarily on one service – sustained supply to wells. Inevitably\, this passive or singularly focused groundwater management means that other groundwater services are compromised over time. With a bit more attention and sophistication\, however\, the multiple benefits that groundwater basins provide can be preserved\, and in some cases\, enhanced. \nIn his David Keith Todd Distinguished lecture for 2019\, Maurice Hall will share his vision on how more holistic and inclusive groundwater management can increase the resilience of our water supply and sustain and enhance the services that groundwater basins provide for a wide range of stakeholders. Diverse backgrounds and different expectations of participants can also inhibit a group’s ability to reach direct consensus on project objectives. Here\, we discuss the scientific decision-making processes and a robust yet straight forward route which distills group goals into a coordinated strategy. Utilizing geospatial analysis by accessing free\, high- resolution remote sensing data also helps move a project from consensus to implementation\, especially in data-poor regions and when budget constraints limit data gathering. The Miramar Bluff contains a portion of the California Coastal Trail that heads north and south for bikers\, runners\, and walkers. It is a sandy beach mostly accessible at low tide and it is a perfect location to watch whales\, porpoises\, shorebirds\, harbor seals and other marine life. \nAbout the Cleanup: \n\nWhere to Meet: Meet on the Coastal Trail entrance off of Magellan Avenue so for your GPS you can enter 200 Magellan Avenue\, Half Moon Bay\, CA.\nSite captains: Celine and National Charity League Coastside leader.\nParking: Free street parking.\nCleanup Areas: We’ll cover Miramar Beach\, coastal trail and neighborhood streets.\nSupplies: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own buckets and reusable gloves. Extra gloves\, buckets\, pickup sticks and specific tools for this site cleanup will be provided while supplies last. SUMMARY:STORMS Seminar: Reported Stormwater Program Spending in California
DESCRIPTION:Communities in California fund stormwater management programs to prevent flooding and improve water quality. While stormwater management has been an important investment for decades\, only a few studies have estimated overall municipal costs of stormwater programs and infrastructure in the state. \nAs part of ongoing work to improve tools for stormwater management in California\, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 9 Environmental Finance Center at Sacramento State (EFC at Sacramento State) compiled sources of existing\, readily available data on reported stormwater budgets and expenditures to provide an improved estimate of existing activities. Using data from annual program reports published as part of stormwater permit compliance requirements\, the study estimated a snapshot of annual spending based on identified reports for over 160 entities\, including cities\, counties\, flood control districts\, and port authorities. \nThe findings illustrate the difficulty in assembling costs that are published in varying ways\, as well as inconsistencies in publicly available data. Current methods of reporting can be updated to increase accessibility and standardization. SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Principles of Riverscape Health & Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar we will immerse you deeper into reading riverscapes; specifically\, we will introduce the principles of riverscape health. These principles will be cast in a light to help you better recognize impairments\, articulate the scope of what’s been lost\, and realistically target recovery potential. Then we will introduce low-tech process-based restoration (PBR) as a means of addressing structural starvation so pervasive among many riverscapes today. We will briefly highlight six principles of low-tech PBR\, which help guide restoration planning\, design and implementation and more critically place our actions as ecological restoration practitioners in context. While we will focus on examples of these principles in practice for riverine and riparian ecosystmes\, the mechanistic and functional focus has merit in cross-over to restoration of other ecosystems as well. \n  \nSpeaker bio: Joe Wheaton is an Associate Professor Utah State and a fluvial geomorphologist with over eighteen years of experience in river restoration. Joe’s research is focused on better understanding the dynamics of riverscapes\, how such fluvial processes shape instream and riparian habitats\, and how biota modulate and amplify those processes. Joe o-founded the Restoration Consortium at USU and runs the Ecogeomorphology & Topographic Analysis Lab in USU’s Department of Watershed Science.
