SUMMARY:Burlingame Citizens Environmental Council: How Will Sea Level Rise Impact You?
DESCRIPTION:Join The Burlingame Citizens Environmental Council on Earth Day\, April 22\, to learn how sea level rise will impact you and will be mitigated\, with guest speaker Len Materman\, CEO of the San Mateo County Flood and Sea Level Rise Resiliency District. \nLearn how this agency is working to make our community more resilient to sea level rise\, flooding and coastal erosion with projects that will protect and enhance our environment. More specifically\, the objective is to raise shoreline and creek bank elevations along 1.6 miles of Bay shoreline and 1.5 miles of creeks to remove properties from the current FEMA 100-year floodplain\, plus approximately 6 feet to allow for sea level rise – a Bay water level approximately 10 feet above today’s daily high tide. \nThis program\, “What Will Sea Level Rise Adaption Look Like?”\, will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. on Zoom. Admission is free. Pre-registration is required here.

SUMMARY:ASCE Lifelines Conference 2021
DESCRIPTION:Join Us in Los Angeles in 2021!\nOn behalf of the Program Committee\, you are cordially invited to participate in the San Fernando Earthquake Conference on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering\, to be held February 7-10\, 2021. \n  \nThe ASCE Infrastructure Resilience Division (IRD)\, in partnership with The University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, is pleased to announce the San Fernando Earthquake Conference – 50 years of Lifeline Engineering (Lifelines2021)\, focusing on “Understanding\, Improving & Operationalizing Hazard Resilience for Lifeline Systems.” The February 9\, 1971 San Fernando California Earthquake was a devastating yet seminal event which\, for the first time\, demonstrated the seismic threat to lifelines that fundamentally support our modern livelihoods. Knowledge gained from this event initiated the study of lifeline systems world-wide\, including water\, wastewater\, electric power\, gas and liquid fuels\, communications\, transportation\, and solid waste management systems. The founding efforts of the ASCE Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering\, a predecessor unit to the current IRD\, by international leaders like the late Charles Martin Duke from UCLA established lifeline systems into a mainstream discipline\, now accepted as fundamental for community and regional resilience. The 50th anniversary of the San Fernando Earthquake is an opportunity to reflect on the need to increase the resilience of our critical infrastructure systems to earthquakes and other hazards. The conference will provide a retrospective of where we are today and how we got here\, and help define a global vision for where we are going to create resilient infrastructure systems within interdisciplinary and multihazard environments which support community and regional resilience. These encompass the conference goals. \n

SUMMARY:Tunitas Creek Beach Clean-up
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  Due to the State-Wide Shelter-In-Place Order\, Tunitas Beach Clean-Ups will be cancelled until further notice. Sign-ups will stay active on Eventbrite\, but just be mindful that there may be cancellations.  \nYou can find more details and Sign-Up @ Eventbrite.com here \nFeel free to email aloha@TLClocals.org with questions\, information or concerns. Hope to see you all out there !! \nDescription\nTunitas Creek Beach is a hidden gem to the South of Half Moon Bay that due to it’s secluded and challenging location\, has historically been pretty badly polluted by visitors. Being such a long stretch of beach with a steep cliff at one end and long hike along and creek crossing at the other it makes collecting and removing trash and debris even more difficult. We need all hands on deck for our monthly clean-ups to keep this beach beautiful and its sea life safe and healthy. This is a great opportunity for groups of friends\, families\, co-workers\, school groups\, athletes\, clubs to come together\, have fun and really make a difference! \nWhat to bring: \nBYOB (bring your own bucket and gloves). . . we do have buckets and gloves in limited supply\, but they go quickly! \nWater is provided\, but we do ask you bring a reusable bottle to fill-up. \nWe also have zero-waste snacks\, Bananas / Tangerines / Pistacios\, hand sanitizer and sunscreen at all events. \nChange of shoes/socks is highly recommended as certain times of year the creek and lagoon on the beach may need to be crossed. \nOther considerations: \nMost clean-ups run from 9-11* on the 4th Sunday* of the monthand then we sort and stage the trash for pick-up at the Hwy Entrance to the South until 11:30am. \n*Note: our April and September events will fall on a Saturday and will coincide with Pacific Beach Coalition’s Earth Day of Action / EcoFest and SMC’s CA Coastal Clean-Up Day \nThere are no age restrictions and is a GREAT event for families. \nParking and clean-up check in will be at the Highway 1 turn-out (south of Tunitas Creek Rd) on the West side of the HWY – there will be signs posted. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: There are currently NO facilities/bathrooms at Tunitas. The nearest bathrooms are in HMB proper (9mi North) or San Gregorio State Beach (6mi South) \n
